RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Coordinates undergraduate student academic notice and disqualification processes. In collaboration with the Registrar’s office, identifies students facing academic notice and disqualification on a semester basis and oversees the process of identifying, communicating, and advising students to ensure campus and system-wide goals for retention and graduation are met. This includes ensuring that students facing notice and disqualification are receiving all advising services mandated by Executive Order including developing, implementing, and evaluating advising programs that meet the guidelines set forth as well as needs of students who are facing probation and disqualification as well as for other academically placed at-risk populations. At-risk student populations include, but are not limited to, students who are undeclared, unregistered, under-enrolled, and students with low major and term GPAs. Leads the coordination of the annual Major Fair that serves students who are undeclared or unsure of their major. Works with students experiencing academic difficulty and assists them in thinking through the implications of alternative solutions, evaluating past occurrences, and recommending appropriate courses of action. Analyzes notice data and makes recommendations to the Director to improve and enhance advising services to special populations. Coordinates the development and implementation of notice and disqualification workshops. Creates, monitors, and updates semester reports on services provided to student facing notice and disqualification as well we student progress through the process. Analyzes data to propose changes and courses of actions regarding policies and procedures.

Provides individual and group academic advisement to new and continuing students from term of entrance until graduation. Assists with the planning, implementation, and delivery of a comprehensive academic advising program. Independently plans, problem solves, recommends courses of action, and completes multiple, competing duties of a complex nature with minimal supervision. Assists students with scheduling classes, coursework evaluation, informing students of major/minor requirements, and long-range academic planning. Reports and tracks student progress through the computerized advising tracking system. Provides comprehensive advisement to students who have problems in choosing, pursuing, and adjusting themselves to educational and career goals. Assists students in resolving problems related to their academic progress. Advises students who are experiencing academic difficulty and applies techniques to evaluate past occurrences to recommend appropriate courses of action. Evaluates previous and/or potential coursework to determine course equivalencies, transfer units, and GE/graduation requirement placement. Facilitates new student advising at Island View Orientation as well as student success workshops throughout the year. Assists with developing and updating advising materials and with the development of advising tools for major advising. Performs transfer evaluation and graduation audits by applying comprehensive knowledge and expertise of all graduation requirements, necessitating explanation and interpretation of facts to all undergraduate students. Serves as a major advisor for one or more majors (as assigned). Serves as an Academic Advising resource by meeting regularly with various committees (as assigned) such as the Academic Appeals Board, General Education, and Curriculum committees, etc. Through collaboration with other colleagues, monitors and evaluates the quality of the advising program as well as promotes consistency in advisement. Performs additional related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

Experience: Bachelor's degree in communication, psychology, sociology, education, or closely related field required; Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: At least three years of professional experience required. A closely related master’s may be substituted for one year of required experience.

Other Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of general university policies and practices related to undergraduate education and undergraduate degree programs highly desirable. Working knowledge of the basic principles of student development theory and individual and group behavior and techniques and methods of interviewing and educational programming. Must have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated knowledge of college advising, communication, problem solving, teamwork skills, evaluating and recruiting techniques. Working knowledge of student services programs outside Academic Advising. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Duties may be of a more complex and/or sensitive nature, and of considerable complexity, requiring the application of a high degree of judgement or persuasiveness, imagination, and professional skills. Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature. Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals. Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions. Participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences, and interviews, make oral presentations; clearly express ideas. Write clear and concise reports; utilize word processing and data programs, work effectively under pressure, compete assignments in a timely manner, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and faculty and work in a multi- cultural environment. Ability to meet the needs of a multicultural, multisexed, and multi-aged student body group. Experience in working with computerized student information systems, databases, and other computer software desirable. Ability to organize and set priorities; quickly learn and apply the goals and objectives of the program, and the policies and regulations of all undergraduate programs. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in all aspects of work and to interact with and be sensitive to a diverse clientele; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. May be required to work outside of traditional business hours with advanced notice when possible.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083, revised July 21, 2017, as a condition of employment.

Hiring salary: $5,276 - $5,540 per month
